STUDIO ETIQUETTE AND SAFETY ALERTS
Students use the studio at their own risk and must be aware of the inherent hazards of a working pottery studio environment. These risks include the use of sharp tools, exposure to chemicals and high temperatures amongst other risks.
All students should wear appropriate clothing and comfortable flat shoes with non-slip soles and covered toes. Old casual clothing is recommended, and it is quite likely clay will be splattered!
Please bring an apron and towel if you are using the wheel.
Long hair must be tied back for wheel work, and we recommend you leave jewellery and watches at home.
We cannot be liable for any damage to clothing or loss/damage to valuables.
We will give a brief health and safety demo before your first class.
Please note the start and finish time of your class as we may have other students coming in after you.
Ceramics is not an exact science and results can be unpredictable at times. It is part of your ceramic journey to overcome setbacks and sometimes errors result in wonderful new ideas and techniques. Please keep an open mind and not allow disappointments to put you off continuing to learn.
We often take photos in the studio for social media – please let us know if you would prefer not to be involved.
If you need to miss one of your sessions please let us know by email or text and will do our best to arrange a catch up session at another time. This may be untutored. We can’t always carry sessions over the end of term.
Please let us know if you decide not to continue with your regular course sessions as soon as possible.
EQUIPMENT AND WORKSPACES
Please ensure any tools you have used are cleaned and put away.
Please make sure your workspace is left as you would expect to find it – especially the wheels.
Please do not remove tools or books from the studio without permission.
Please wear a mask for sanding and do it outside the studio or under a running tap.
Always clean up with a damp sponge or cloth as clay dust can damage your health.
Please ask us for a first aid kit – we carry two.
Please switch off the wheels when cleaning to avoid accidental injury.
Please don’t eat or drink around the work areas.
Please wear a mask whilst using oxides.
PLEASE INFORM US IF YOU ARE PREGNANT – EXTRA PRECAUTIONS WILL BE TAKEN.
There is no unauthorised access to the kiln shed.
There are two very obvious fire exits from the studio and the assemble point is on the lawn or through the passage to the road.
Please only glaze your pots under supervision – which will be given as we go along.
Only suitable accomplished pots will be glazed and there is a small charge for firing of £5 per 500g.
The kiln cannot accommodate any pots over 30 cms tall and 30 cms diameter.
Please be very respectful of other student’s work and do not pick up work that doesn’t’ belong to you. Wrapped bags may contain fragile work in progress. Bisque fired work can also be very fragile.
Please make sure you put discarded clay in the correct recycling bin!
Please help yourself to tea, coffee and biscuits on demand.
